Armidale Heritage Bus Tour (Tuesday, 9th December)

The Armidale Visitor Information Centre’s 2-hour guided bus tour of Armidale will give you an overview of the city’s attractions. The volunteer guide will describe the historical background of the city and the tour will take you past some of the heritage buildings, including the cathedrals and churches, the New England Regional Art Museum, UNE and other educational and cultural centres, and beautiful gardens. Some of these will inevitably excite your interest and you will want to go back and explore them further.
The bus tour will leave the College area at about 1.00 pm (time subject to confirmation).
Minimum 10 participants

Saumarez Tour (Wednesday, 10th December)
Saumarez Homestead from the eastern side, viewed from the site of the original tennis court. The ground floor was built in 1888 with the upper story completed in 1906. The bricks were produced on the property.

Saumarez Homestead is a National Trust property to the south of Armidale Airport. F.J. White took over the property in 1878 after the death of his father in 1875, and built a single story brick house in 1888 and added a second storey in 1906. After he and his wife Margaret died in the 1930s, their unmarried daughters Mary and Elsie lived on in the house until Mary’s death in 1948 and Elsie’s in 1981. The family donated the house and farm buildings to the National Trust in 1984. The house still contains the original furniture, curtains, ornaments, paintings, engravings and other decorations much as they were in the 1920s. It is a remarkably intact collection giving a glimpse of the family life of the Whites.
The tour bus will leave the College area at 11.00 am and volunteer guides will show you the farm buildings followed by lunch in the Visitor’s Centre. After lunch, there will be a guided tour of the homestead and the bus will return to the College area about 3.00 pm.
Minimum 10 participants

View from the ground floor verandah on the north-western corner of the house. The conservatory can be seen in the background.
