Field Trips at Glance
Pre-conference Tour
South West Water Birds, Flora & Wetlands (23rd - 25th November 2007)
Cost: $160 p.p. includes all transport, accommodation at holiday camp, bed linen and breakfasts. Lunches and Dinners will be at local café/restaurants and are not included in the price. Please allow approx. $120 for these meals.
Mid-conference tours (one day) – Wednesday 28th November
1) Julimar Conservation Park, Drummond Natural Diversity Recovery Catchment and Karakamia - SOLD OUT
2) The northern Jarrah Forest Tour
This tour is free of charge and is graciously sponsored by Alcoa. The tour includes all transport, morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. Numbers are limited to 90 people.
3) Shoalwater Marine Park
Costs: $55.00 which includes return bus from Convention Centre and boat tour. Lunch will be BYO or purchase at café or kiosk at ferry terminal.
4) Wheatbelt Bushland - Conservation and Restoration -

5) Karakamia Wildlife Sanctuary – BBQ Dinner and Tour by Spotlight
Costs: $66.00 includes transport, dinner, and tour.

8) Rottnest Island
Cruise to Rottnest Island and participate in snorkelling or land based activities. Cost: $175.00 for snorkelling or $145.00 for terrestial option. Costs include all transport, morning tea and lunch.

Pre-conference Tours
South West Water Birds, Flora & Wetlands (23rd - 25th November 2007)
Preliminary Itinerary:
Friday 23rd– evening - Westrail's 'Australind' train from Perth leaves the Perth City station at 5.55pm on the Friday evening, November 23, arriving in Bunbury at 8.35pm. Meet your tour host and bus driver (ESA Member, Bernie Masters), have a meal in Bunbury and then drive to the campsite west of Busselton, arriving about 10.30pm.
Saturday 24th - morning - visit to the Vasse Wonnerup estuaries - Ramsar listed - and learn about environmental values, conflicting development proposals, etc.
Saturday - afternoon - visit to two areas of remnant vegetation which are full of rare and endangered plants and animals and which consist of Threatened Ecological Communities - Ambergate Reserve and the Ruabon-Tutunup Railway Line Reserve.
Sunday 25th - morning - visit to Quindalup wildlife park for a couple of hours to see Australian wildlife, then visit to Meelup Regional Park north of Dunsborough
Sunday - afternoon - head north and visit Leschenault Inlet at Bunbury (dolphins?) to see wetlands, water birds and mangroves. Alternatively, a 4 km walk around Big Swamp in the centre of town. The return trip is via Westrail bus from Bunbury, leaving at 5.40pm, arriving at the East Perth terminal at 8.45pm. Attendees need to organize taxi to go to their accommodation around Perth.
(Please note: The Australasian Ornithological Congress starts the following day, Mon 3rd Dec, at UWA)

Mid-conference tours (one day) – Wednesday 28th November
1) Julimar Conservation Park, Drummond Natural Diversity Recovery Catchment and Karakamia - SOLD OUT
This day-long tour takes participants on a tour through the Chittering Valley, the northern extent of the Jarrah forests to the woodlands of Drummond Nature Reserve. Tour overview will be with morning tea at the Stringy Bark Winery in Chittering. Tour participants will have the opportunity to sample wines if they wish. The tour proceeds through the Julimar Conservation Park and will have a presentation by Department of Environment and Conservation officers on the Western Shield program and conservation programs for threatened black cockatoos.
The tour then proceeds to the Drummond Natural Diversity Recovery Catchment to view management programs for the regeneration of threatened flora and threatened Ecological Communities. After an afternoon stop at the Toodyay Hotel, the trip culminates with an evening BBQ, then a walking spot-light tour at Karakamia Sanctuary. The spotlighting tour makes this a very long day, but seeing the range of medium sized mammals up close makes it well worth it.

2) The northern Jarrah Forest Tour
This day-long tour begins at the Hills Forest Discovery Centre in Mundaring National Park and travels southward along the Darling Range. Participants will see educational and interpretive facilities in Mundaring, view Baudin’s Cockatoo roost sites and have a presentation on the ecology of Forest cockatoos, tour Bauxite Mining operations near Dwellingup and have a presentation and tour from DEC Science Division staff on the meso-predator release projects currently underway in the Darling Range.
Time: Leaves Perth 0800 – Returns 1730.
Cost: $105.00 includes all transport, morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea.
Tour Leader: Stefan de Haan DEC, with assistance from DEC Science Division, Hills Forest and Alcoa World Alumina staff.

3) Shoalwater Marine Park
This trip includes a 45 minute glass bottom boat tour, accompanied by expert from DEC Marine Section, of Shoalwater Marine Park during which we will see seals and other marine life, followed by a walk around Penguin Island which will include a visit to the Penguin enclosure and a brief presentation on the rehabilitation of penguins. Very good views of Bridled terns and other seabird nesting.
Total time would be approximately 6 hours all up. Leaving around 9am; return~3pm.
Costs: $55.00 which includes return bus from Convention Centre and boat tour. Lunch will be BYO or purchase at café or kiosk at ferry terminal.

4) Wheatbelt Bushland - Conservation and Restoration - SOLD OUT
The Wheatbelt is famous for its diverse flora and native vegetation, and infamous for its clearing history. Good work is being done to conserve and restore the bushland of the Wheatbelt within the agricultural matrix it now inhabits. This fieldtrip will take you on a journey through the Wheatbelt to see conservation and restoration in action on private land, community reserves and nationals parks. Researchers, conservation organisations and locals will discuss the issues facing vegetation in the Wheatbelt, share their work and the role of ecological science in their projects. Along the way you will get to experience historic towns, diverse kwongan heath and iconic Salmon Gums.
Tentative Itinerary:
1) Mt Observation – Views, Wandoo decline, Carnaby Cockatoo nests
2) Quairading Reserve - different native vegetation associations, including granite dome, salmon gum woodlands and kwongan heath, weed management, community reserve management.
3) Lunch at Quairading
4) Revegetation site on private land near Tammin - part of Greening Australia's old 'Living Landscapes' - this is a demonstration site for different revegetation techniques for biodiversity restoration.
5) Stop in York on the way home - first agriculture in the Wheatbelt, plus cool old buildings.
Cost: $44 per person including lunch at Café Cino in Quairading and afternoon refreshments.
Numbers: 20 max (although another mini bus can be organized if there is demand)
5) Karakamia Wildlife Sanctuary – BBQ Dinner and Tour by Spotlight
Description: Karakamia Wildlife Sanctuary is owned and managed by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy and is a good 1 hour drive from the Perth CBD. This tour offers the combination of a BBQ dinner in a bush setting and a walking, spotlight tour of the sanctuary. The walk follows rocky bush-tracks and some hills are encountered along the route, where the ground can be slippery, so participants need to be relatively fit, stable on their feet, and wearing appropriate footwear. Participants will see a range of wildlife including guaranteed sightings of woylies, quenda and brush-tailed possums.
Leave Convention Centre: ~5.00pm
Return ~10pm
Costs: $66.00 includes transport, dinner, and tour.

6) Pilbara One Day Trip. - NOT OPERATING
Visit the spectacular Central Pilbara - east Hamersley Range on a one day mid-conference tour. Depart Perth at 5:40 and travel to Newman where the party will pick up 4x4s and travel west into the Hamersley Range. Several stops will be made along the journey to look at the floristics of acacia woodland, the relationship between fire and mulga and the juxtaposition of mulga and spinifex. Lunch along with a short presentation by park staff on the success of joint management with indigenous people will be provided at the visitor centre in Karijini National Park. After lunch the party will visit one of the many spectacular gorges within Karijini National Park. These gorges are important refugia for many arid and tropical elements in the biota. The remainder of the afternoon will be spent investigating the impacts of mining developments and pastoralism on the biodiversity and conservation values of the Hamersley Range and how industry and government are working in concert to mitigate these impacts. The return flight to Perth will arrive at 8:30 from Paraburdoo.
Temperatures will be high, (high 30s to mid 40s) so adequate clothing, a hat and sunscreen will be necessary. Sturdy boots are also a must. A personal water bottle would also be desirable.
Lunch and plenty of refreshments will be provided.

7) Perth Zoo – please note that this tour will be at your own leisure and will not appear on the registration form as an option
Australia’s best small zoo is just 5 minutes from the Perth CBD on the banks of the Swan River. Perth Zoo opened in 1898 and today has a range of interesting exhibits including: African Savannah, Sumatran Orang-utan Exhibit, Reptile Encounter, Australian Wetlands and Crocodile Exhibit, Rainforest Retreat, and Nocturnal House. The Perth Zoo is open from 9am to 5pm and offers a range of daily tour options:
- free decent guided walking tours starting at 11am,
- join a small group for a 1-hour guided tour aboard one of the zebra cars ($3.50 ($2.50 concession)), or
- Visitors can book a walking tour at the Information Centre on the day of there visit (cost $1 per person (minimum 10 and maximum of 20) should be made with the Visitor Services Coordinator).

Getting to the Zoo (20 Labouchere Road, South Perth)
By Bus
From Perth CBD Bus No. 30 and 31 stop right in front of the Zoo weekdays or weekends, leaving regularly from the Esplanade Bus-Port. Bus #34 stops behind the Zoo and leaves from the Wellington Street bus-port.
By Ferry
Perth Zoo is a short walk from the Mends Street Jetty in South Perth. Ferries depart from the Barrack Street Jetty (across the river in Perth) every 15-20 minutes during weekdays.

1050 Presentation: Your Island to Care For (PowerPoint Presentation on Rottnest Island issues) followed by discussion
1120 Board coach for Island tour - Specialists to discuss their particular programs, e.g. waste management, native flora & fauna management, revegetation, marine management strategies, etc
1230 Lunch at the Basin (catered by Geordie Bay Café)
1315 Board coach for snorkel at Little Salmon Bay/Little Parakeet Bay (With full instruction and interpretation by Dive Master and Education Officer) (20 people maximum)

Land-based option, to be decided, either consideration of coastal management & vegetation management issues, presentation of university research on Rottnest Island, or guided trip by train to military history sites
