Carbon Offset Scheme
In an effort to minimise, reduce and/or offset the ecological footprint that events such as the ESA 2007 conference produce, the local organising committee has taken several steps in the organisation and planning of this event. One of these steps is to offer delegates who fly to the event the opportunity to offset their CO2 emissions by contributing to the planting of native trees in Western Australia, while at the same time assisting to restore salinity affected areas. Funds contributed by delegates will be used in full to support the Carbon Neutral Program (www.carbonneutral.com.au) established by Men of the Trees, an independent, not for profit, non-government organisation that has already planted millions of trees throughout Australia. For further information on the model and the assumptions on which the calculations are based, please refer to the paper: www.carbonneutral.com.au/rose_bj_2006._ghg-energy-calc_background_paper_august_2006.pdf. Thank you for considering how your participation at ESA 2007 is affecting the world around you and how you can take steps to minimise, reduce and/or offset your personal ecological footprint.
ESA Conference: opportunity to off-set CO2 emissions from flight to conference venue |

The following table provides an estimate of the emissions, number of native trees required to off-set these emissions and the cost of planting the native trees through the 'Men of the Trees Program' (www.menofthetrees.com.au). |
Some airlines (e.g. Virgin Blue) offer the opportunity to off-set the CO2 emissions at the time of booking. Their calculations will include additional variables and thus the resulting offset costs may be different to the estimates shown below. |
