New methods in multivariate statistics: a hands-on workshop with PERMANOVA+

PRIMER v6 is a well-known computer package for analysing multivariate ecological data. This workshop will provide participants with the opportunity to walk through the main features of the PERMANOVA + add-on (developed by Marti Anderson in conjunction with Bob Clarke and Ray Gorley) with a series of real examples to uncover its many features and to experience the freedom to explore, visualise and test complex multivariate hypotheses, all within the PRIMER v6 environment. Bring your own data if you have some that you'd like to ask questions about, as there will be some time to examine sample datasets.

Cost includes: Course notes, use of computer with software installed for the day, morning and afternoon tea, opportunity to purchase software license at a discounted rate.

An Introduction to "R"

This one day course will provide an elementary introduction to the "R" software for statistical modeling and computing. The course can cover a range of elementary topics that can be catered for course participants. Topics include: R and the (Tinn-R Editor), R objects, an introduction to graphics, manipulating data, importing and exporting data, an introduction to modelling in R.

Wildlife photography

9am - 1pm, Wednesday 3 December

Cost: ESA Members $93.50 Non ESA Members $104.50

In this half day course Pavel German will guide participants through the principles and techniques of inspiring nature photography, and how to significantly improve documentary shots taken as part of study or work. The course will start with a slideshow of spectacular images from around the world, an outline of appropriat and affordable equipment, composition and what's different about shooting digital. This will be followed by a practical demonstration of techniques on some captive native animals, in which participants may try their hand (if they have their own equipment) or just observe. The morning will conclude with a Q&A session, and short talk on how to publish your photographs. Pavel is one of Australia’s leading exponents of wildlife and nature photography, publishing hundreds of images every year. He is probably best known for his captivating close-up shots of animals, and eye for detail.
