The ESA is saddened to hear of the passing of Peter Hitchcock. Peter was one of Australia’s most remarkable environmentalists, with national and global contributions to forest conservation, rainforest protection, World Heritage, and national parks.
A Sydney Morning Herald Obituary to Peter has been placed online. It is available here.
While this summarises Peter's main achievements across Australia and internationally, many others could be added and we encourage ESA members to share their stories and condolences in the comments below.
Liana, Peter’s wife, has mentioned that a memorial service and a spreading of ashes is planned for the future to be held in Werrikimbee National Park, inland from Port Macquarie. This wet tall forest and rainforest Park was created by Peter in the 1970s against prevailing attitudes to forest conservation.
